Overview
The Sun Fire V40z server offers excellent performance and
affordable pricing for a four-processor server based on AMD's
Opteron processor. Using the HyperTransport architecture,
the Sun Fire V40z server provides near-linear scalability
and extremely fast throughput for x86 applications. This server
is highly versatile: It can run 32-bit operating systems and
applications, protecting investments in existing IT infrastructures,
and 64-bit software, enabling customers to solve more complex
problems requiring more than 4 GB of memory. The Sun Fire
V40z server is suitable for technical applications, such as
high-performance electronic design, oil exploration, bioscience,
scientific research, financial risk management, as well as
enterprise software, including business processing Web services,
Java application server, and database management.
Sun provides complete system support for the Solaris x86,
Red Hat, and SuSE Linux operating systems on the Sun Fire
V40z server. The server is also certified to run Microsoft
Windows 2000 and 2003. Housed in a 3U rackmount form factor,
the Sun Fire V40z server offers high rack density. Redundant
power and cooling help ensure continued server operation.
Multiple Sun Fire V40z servers can be managed remotely using
a built-in Lights Out Management feature. The Sun Fire V40z
server comes with a standard three-year warranty and has an
extremely low total cost of ownership.
High Performance
The Sun Fire V40z server supports up to four AMD Opteron Processors
800 Series (844, 848, 850). The system delivers high-performance
computing in an x86 architecture that protects investment
in applications and IT skills and supports migration from
32-bit to 64-bit computing.
The Sun Fire V40z server delivers processor scalability and
I/O performance via high-speed interconnect technology. HyperTransport
provides a high-speed, low-latency connection between processors
and core logic. The integrated memory controller reduces latency
by pooling memory resources onto a single coherent space,
lowering bandwidth constraints on CPU and memory resources.
Initially, the system will support up to 32 GB of DDR memory.
Large memory capacity is suitable for running memory-intensive
applications. The ECC and ChipKill technologies enable a system
to continue running even in the event of a memory failure.
An Ultra320 SCSI interface supports up to six hard drives,
providing a fast, scalable performance for 32- and 64-bit
enterprise applications. This feature enables efficient disk
utilization for I/O-bound applications and redundancy for
mission-critical data. A built-in RAID-1 mirroring controller
enables high data availability.
Versatility
The Sun Fire V40z server architecture can support a variety
of UNIX operating systems running in 32-bit or 64-bit mode,
including 64-bit Red Hat and SUSE Linux, 32-bit Red Hat Linux,
and 32-bit Solaris Operating System, x86 Platform Edition.
This system is also certified to run Microsoft Windows operating
system. A choice of operating systems means your IT staff
can work with familiar tools and interfaces and can select
from a wide variety of applications running in 32-bit or 64-bit
mode.
The Sun Fire V40z server comes standard with seven 64-bit
PCI-X slots, enabling connectivity to additional network,
storage, or graphics devices while supporting full CPU path
bandwidth. Connectivity options provide flexibility to meet
evolving business and application requirements and enable
horizontal scaling of Sun Fire V40z servers, so you can cost-effectively
create high-performance supercomputers.
The Sun Fire V40z server is a cluster-ready configuration.
It features dual integrated Gigabit Ethernet for setting up
failover configurations for network I/O, increasing network
efficiency, flexibility, and availability. The system will
be able to use high-bandwidth, low-latency system interconnects,
such as Myrinet or InfiniBand, to build horizontally-scaled,
high-performance clusters for high performance technical computing
(HPTC) applications.
Management
The Sun Fire V40z server comes with an integrated service
processor with two dedicated 10/100 Ethernet ports, so you
can administer the system through a variety of management
interfaces, including command-line (SSH), IPMI v1.5, or SNMP.
A second Ethernet port enables daisy-chaining of multiple
Sun Fire 40z servers via management Ethernet cables in a single
rack, simplifying deployment of a set of rackmounted systems
and helping lower system support costs.
Lights Out Management (LOM) provides remote administration,
including monitoring and reporting of system and component
status, via a command-line interface (CLI) remote console
or SNMP or IPMI v1.5 protocols using the out-of-band management
Ethernet, or using in-band communication thru the running
main system operating systems. With out-of-band management,
the system administrator can remotely power on/off the system,
monitor system FRU status, and load operating system software
and system firmware. With in-band management, the system administrator
can monitor system status and control system power down.
The service processor provides the following functions:
- Extensive control and reporting over environmentals, power,
hardware, and BIOS/OS features
- Remote flash upgrades of system BIOS and service processor
software
- Full suite of remote diagnostics that can allow rapid
diagnosis and correction
- User configurable serial console accessible via a physical
port or re-directed through management network
- Front and back LEDs clearly show server status, including
power, fault, and so on, for easier physical management
of many Sun
- Fire V40z servers in a large server cluster
Availability
The Sun Fire V40z server comes standard with redundant,
hot-swap power supplies and cooling fans. The internal disks
can be mirrored, using a built-in RAID-1 mirroring controller,
to assure data redundancy. Memory is ECC protected. Along
with support for high availability software such as Sun Cluster
3.x, the Sun Fire V40z server offers built-in redundancy and
software redundancy to ensure application availability to
run customers' mission-critical applications.
Investment Protection
With support for 32-bit x86 operating systems and applications,
the Sun Fire V40z server enables customers to run their existing
applications and thus get higher return on their existing
investment in their software purchases. In addition, the Sun
Fire V40z server is supported by Sun Services, for one-stop
support for system and software components from Sun and third-parties,
with the exception of Microsoft Windows operating system.
Sun Services can help customers resolve any system issues
that may arise, raising the service level of your Sun Fire
V40z server and lowering total cost of ownership. Take advantage
of a special three-year subscription offer that includes a
Solaris RTU, patches, updates, upgrade to Solaris 10 Operating
System, and Sun Software Support Services (S4).
This system has a standard 3 RU form factor and fits most
any industry-standard 19-inch racks.
Solution Choices
With the support for Solaris Operating System, x86 Platform
Edition, customers can run reliable business processing applications
such as Java Enterprise System, Oracle, Sybase, BEA, Websphere,
and Veritas, with protection from Internet viruses.
The Sun Fire V40z server also supports 32-bit and 64-bit
Red Hat and SuSE Linux operating systems, giving customers
a large choice of technical applications in the EDA, MCAE,
oil and gas, and other techical fields, along with access
to a large collection of open source software. In addition,
the Sun Fire V40z server is certified to run Windows Server
2000 and 2003, enabling customers to run existing workgroup
applications such as file and print and e-mail.
