sun fire b10p blade server, detailed viewThe Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade enables you to seamlessly integrate SSL acceleration capabilities into the Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform. Designed specifically to optimize SSL processing, the custom hardware specialty blade can process SSL transactions up to tens of times faster than CPU-based SSL processing. At the same time, the Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade increases platform utilization by freeing system processors to focus on their core strength of application processing. By off-loading and accelerating SSL decryption and encryption tasks from system processors, this specialty blade can significantly increase the performance and availability of your secure applications at a low cost.

The Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade further increases performance and traffic handling capacity through its support for direct proxy-to-client response. This allows the proxy blade to send encrypted responses directly to a client, eliminating routing back through the Sun Fire B10n Content Load Balancing Blade.

The Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade also enhances system security. Clear-text support enables the platform to balance secure loads based on content by sending decrypted clear-text messages back to the load balancer. The clear text can also be leveraged for intrusion detection applications. In addition, tamperproof key and certificate protection as well as centralized key and certificate administration deliver higher levels of security and ease of management.

Blade Platform Compatability
A tightly integrated, fully tested component of the Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform, the Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade delivers optimal performance, availability, and reliability. The blade plugs directly into the Sun Fire B1600 Blade System Chassis, supporting easy installation. The flexible, modular architecture also allows you to easily scale the solution from a single chassis to across multiple racks of servers. Hot-plug and hot-swap features enable you to dynamically add or remove resources, helping you to control costs through flexible resource provisioning. Dual Gigabit Ethernet connections, dual power rails, and support for link and blade failover also provide high availability for increased service levels. Command line interface and SNMP support offer additional management flexibility.

Performance
The Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade eliminates routing back through the Sun Fire B10n Content Load Balancing Blade for faster processing, allows direct proxy-to-client response to improve response performance, increases traffic handling capacity, and increases system utilization. The blade lowers TCO and improves response times for higher customer satisfaction.

High Availability
The Internet is an around-the-clock environment, with customers demanding service every hour of the year. There is little room for downtime, as downtime means less revenue and the potential loss of customers.

Sun understands that the push toward greater efficiency cannot compromise reliability, availability, or serviceability. As a result, the Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform is designed so that the failure of any single active component cannot bring the system down. Reliability derives from redundancy throughout the platform's design, including dual redundant power supplies, dual redundant Gigabit Ethernet connections, and other failover capabilities.

Hot-plug and hot-swap features enable you to replace any system component in the event of a failure while the system continues to run. LEDs on each component indicate power, fault, and ready-to-replace status, while remote lights-out management capabilities on both the chassis and on each blade server enable you to take action remotely. The Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform also supports dual failover configurations, enabling you to deploy redundant links and blades for high availability.

Enhanced Security
By off-loading SSL encryption and decryption tasks from system processors, the Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade can process SSL transactions many times faster than CPU-based SSL processing. The specialty blade uses custom hardware to provide packet-level encryption and decryption based on the direction of a Sun Fire B10n Content Load Balancing Blade. The two specialty blades work together to deliver centralized SSL processing for a single server or for a rack of systems, providing a central point for certificate administration and superior price/performance over CPU-based SSL processing.

When the Sun Fire B10n Content Load Balancing Blade recognizes that an SSL-encrypted packet needs decryption, it routes the packet to the appropriate Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade. The Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade decrypts the packet payload and returns clear text to the Sun Fire B10n Content Load Balancing Blade. The load balancer can then examine the packet, make its load-balancing decision, and forward the packet to the chosen server for processing.

Once a response is formulated, the server forwards the packet to the Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade, which encrypts the packet using the parameters of the packet's session. The Sun Fire B10p SSL Proxy Blade then returns the response directly to the client. This support for direct proxy-to-client response further speeds response times and increases traffic handling capacities.

The blade's on-board, tamperproof security key and certificate provides centralized storage and administration of security keys and certificate protection which enhances security by protecting data from tampering and simplifying key and certificate administration.
